Shut the Yop Up!

“What in the world am I watching right now?” is exactly what I say to myself every time I see one of Yop’s newest commercials. For those who don’t know, Yop is a drinkable yogurt marketed by the Yoplait yogurt company. Recently, Yoplait has released a line of commercials that consist of a teenage boy and someone dressed as a giant bottle of the dairy beverage, tights included. Am I the only one who finds this incredibly creepy?

In the past, Yop was known for its popular commercial that consisted of half-asleep teenagers lip-syncing to a “Yopped” version of  the Eddy Grant song, Gimme Hope Jo’anna. As clever and funny as this commercial was, I admit, it was getting old. But how they came up with this idea is beyond me. The new commercials almost make you feel as though you’re missing out on an inside joke. There is a large part of the story missing that leaves you going “huh?” I have seen a lot of crazy commercials but these ones take the cake.

Even though I find myself rolling my eyes every time I see these commercials, I must admit that Yoplait may be on to something. They certainly have outdone themselves this time. I’m not so sure if it was in a good way or not, but it has definitely left people talking, and according to the picture below, I’m not the only one displeased!

Yoplait is definitely on the list of companies to watch when it comes to creative advertisements. Why is the yogurt Jeremy’s best friend? Why can yogourt play chess? Why bother giving the actor in the commercial a name? This is probably the first in a series of commercials that are going to leave people with an uncomfortable craving for fruit-flavoured dairy products.
